Tej Kohli moved by need of Costa Rica's Impoverished

Tej Kohli Foundation helps an autistic child

San Jose, Costa Rica, Nov 26, 2007
It’s pretty hard being an autistic child even in America, where the health care system is often regarded as the best-equipped on the planet. But imagine the hardship experienced by a boy like Jose, a young 12 year old growing up in an impoverished area of Costa Rica with that affliction.
If you were to imagine that the resources to help Jose are scarce, you would be right. When the country’s educational system can barely support the needs of average students, trying to learn with a severe handicap like autism can seem impossible.
Thankfully, Jose was able to catch the attention of The Kohli Foundation. A non-profit created by software entrepreneur Tej Kohli after he encountered deprived and economically challenged children in the Guan caste province of Costa Rica, the foundation aims to help children with their needs – particularly in advancing their education so they can break out of the cycle of poverty.
As a result, Jose has been a participant in special educational programs and had his day to day needs met by The Kohli Foundation, which Tej Kohli has funded with over $150,000 of his own money in the three years since it was founded in 2003. Starting with a group of 12 children, Kohli and his two-person foundation staff now helps care for 72 children, with plans for 125 kids to be helped next year.
And from there, Tej Kohli hopes to build on his success with the kids of Costa Rica to help children across the globe.
“I’ve been fortunate to have a good childhood and a solid education, and I believe it’s important to help other children achieve their dreams too,” says Kohli. “And now it’s time to team up with other charitable organizations to truly enable us to take our efforts worldwide.”
